What it is
Oxytocin is a naturally occurring nine-amino-acid hormone/neuropeptide, well known in childbirth and lactation and studied in social behavior.
Proposed mechanism
It acts on oxytocin receptors (GPCRs) to cause uterine contraction and milk let-down, and centrally influences social/affiliative behavior.1
