What it is

hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a naturally occurring glycoprotein hormone that mimics luteinizing hormone (LH).

Proposed mechanism

It stimulates gonadal function — in males, testicular testosterone production; used in fertility and certain endocrine settings.1 (The "hCG diet" for weight loss is not supported and the FDA has warned against it.)
